MP3 and Bitrates, Explained
- MP3 is a lossy compression standard finalized in 1993. It uses a psychoacoustic model to discard frequencies masked by louder sounds, typically reaching 1/10 the size of WAV with little audible difference.
- Bitrate decides how much information survives: 128k prioritizes size, 192k is the sweet spot, and 320k is the MP3 maximum. Beyond that, switch to FLAC — pushing MP3 bitrates higher gains nothing.
- Converting video to MP3 drops the video stream and re-encodes the audio track, so the result is far smaller than the source video.
