Things to Keep in Mind

  • Compression is lossy — cutting colors or frame rate too far visibly degrades the image
  • GIFs with very few frames gain little from frame-rate reduction
  • Output stays GIF, which is typically larger than equivalent WebP/MP4

Why GIFs Don't Compress Much

  • GIF file size comes from three 1980s constraints: every frame is stored in full (no modern inter-frame prediction), a 256-color ceiling, and LZW compression. A GIF that's already well optimized has very little left to squeeze.
  • The effective levers are all subtraction: drop the frame rate (half the frames, roughly half the size), shrink the dimensions (pixels fall off quadratically), reduce the color count (smaller palette, cheaper indexes).
  • For the same content, WebP or MP4 typically runs 1/5 to 1/10 the size of GIF. GIF's one irreplaceable advantage is that it displays everywhere, with no player required.

GIF Compression FAQ

Will compression remove the animation?

No. Frame rate and color count go down, but the animation keeps playing continuously.

Why is my GIF still big after compressing?

GIF is a 256-color format with limited headroom. If you need it much smaller, convert to WebP or MP4 instead.

How low should I set the color count?

128 colors is visually safe for most GIFs; 64 works when you need aggressive shrinkage, but gradients may shift in color.

Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?

No. Compression runs locally in your browser via FFmpeg WASM — your file never leaves your device.

Can I hit a specific file size?
